The Schweiger movie marathon
These are officially some of the coldest, shortest, and rainiest days of the year. Everyone’s guilty pleasure is curling up at home with a glass of wine and rewatching their favorite movies, and that’s exactly what this season calls for. Our team members each came up with a three-part pairing of film, wine, and food to create a Schweiger Movie Marathon lineup. Read through our picks for ideas for a lazy Friday evening or a date night at home. Fred, Founder
Movie: “The Sound of Music”
Wine: Iteration XV
Food: Sacher Torte
Fred’s movie night combo is refined and European. It’s no surprise that he chose a classic like “The Sound of Music”. Very few films are as timeless and well-rounded as this one. It has sweet and sad music, historical drama, family, romance, adventure, and then, of course, you can never go wrong with Julie Andrews. Fred chose Iteration XV for his pairing. Similar to the Sound of Music, Iteration is genre-bending. It’s our Port-style wine made from Cabernet and Brandy, layered with toasted marshmallow, lavender, and blackberries. While it can be dessert on its own, it’s complex enough to play well with other food, like a platter of sharp cheddar and manchego, buttered popcorn, or Fred’s pairing “” traditional Austrian chocolate cake, Sachertorte. You can follow this recipe and make it yourself, or see if your local bakery has it on the menu.
Wendy, Tasting Room Supervisor
Movie: “My Cousin Vinny”
Wine: 2016 Cabernet Franc
Food: Grilled Fork in the Road Hot Dogs
Wendy’s pairing trifecta will make you dream of summertime and a laid back evening on the 4th of July. She chose “My Cousin Vinny”, a movie that portrays America’s New York and Southern subcultures like a 90s time capsule. Wendy’s food and wine pairings are an awesome match for this movie, as they’re charming and strong in personality and flavor, much like the loud, accented Italian and Alabaman characters in the film, portrayed by the talents of Joe Pesci, Marisa Tomei, and Fred Gwynne. Our 2016 Cab Franc is rich in cherry, plum, and spice notes, and you’ll find her recipes for Grilled Fork in the Road hot dogs with Chopped Celery and Fennel Salad add a balance of savory and tangy to the wine. Top your hot dog with melted American or Cheddar Cheese, bacon bits, dill pickle relish, and yellow mustard.
Sally, Founder
Movie: “Mamma Mia”
Wine: 2016 Family Cuvée
Food: Greek Special Pizza
If you’re not familiar with the sensational “Mamma Mia”, allow Sally to introduce you. To sum it up, “Mamma Mia” is a feel-good movie with a star-studded cast “” Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgard, to name a few. Calling “Mamma Mia” a musical would do it a disservice because while the ABBA soundtrack is fantastic, it would be nothing without the romance and family comedy. Naturally, the best wine to sip during this film is our Family Cuvée. It’s a red wine we always describe as “fun” because Andy gets to play around with the varietals when making this blend. The Family Cuvée has a little bit of everything our family has to offer, and the 2016 is bold with strawberry jam aromas, dark chocolate, and spices. Sally chose a dish from a favorite local spot, Sandy’s Take and Bake in Santa Rosa. They have a delicious Greek Special Pizza loaded with pesto, Kalamata olives, sun dried tomatoes, and other Mediterranean delicacies that will transport you to “Mamma Mia”‘s stunning Greek island backdrop.
Julia, Wine Club Coordinator
Movie: “The Wedding Singer”
Wine: 2018 Chardonnay
Food: Kettle Corn
“The Wedding Singer” is the no-brainer movie of choice for Julia. The soundtrack‘s lineup of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Elvis Costello, and David Bowie is one of her favorites, and on a more personal note, this movie gave her the nickname “Julia Gulia.” Instead of the traditional popcorn and candy movie marathon treats, Julia combines the two with her love for Kettle Corn. To drink, pour yourself a cool glass of our 2018 Chardonnay. The fresh, crisp, white peach notes will complement and settle the popcorn’s sugar. A fitting pair for this sweet and silly Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler comedy.
Paula, Tasting Room
Movie: “You’ve Got Mail”
Wine: 2014 Dedication
Food: Paula’s Pork Tenderloin
Paula’s pick is “You’ve Got Mail”, a romantic comedy from Tom Hanks’ and Meg Ryan’s famous decade as an on-screen couple. It’s a fun, modern love story about two people who despise one another in real life, obliviously falling for each other over the internet. Our 2014 Dedication is the wine Paula suggests, and rightly so. It’s a romantic wine and Andy’s “love letter to our terroir.” This red blend has a complex structure and brings together four varietals from our estate to create beautiful layers of cedar, rose petal, cumin, and dark fruits. For your plate, go with a something classy and decadent, like Paula’s Cherry Balsamic Pork Tenderloin. The meat’s sweet ‘n tangy cherry marinade is extraordinary with Dedication’s silky texture.
Andy, Winemaker
Movie: “Jurassic Park”
Wine: 2016 Malbec
Food: Andy’s “Ribs Fit for a Raptor”
Little known Andy fact, he loves dinosaurs! When “Jurassic Park” hit theaters, he was addicted, and even though he’s seen it well over 40 times, he always cries with joy the first time they show the Brachiosaurus in the wild. However, his absolute favorite dinosaurs are the Triceratops and the Tyrannosaurus Rex (his Peloton username is PelotosaurusRex, follow him!). You can see why “Jurassic Park” holds the throne as Andy’s film choice. If you follow his Raptor Ribs recipe, a word of warning: if you think T-Rex got messy eating, he never had Andy’s Ribs. For the wine, he suggests our 2016 Malbec, a velvety, mouthwatering wine with cherry cola, fennel, and sarsaparilla notes to really take the ribs up a notch.
